Council agenda items and decisions

The Springwood Library roof can easily be fixed

During heavy rains, water leaks into the Springwood Library, endangering the books inside.
Some holes were recently cut in the parapet to divert the water.
They have improved the situation, but more holes need to be made.

Referendums and polls

  • Council can't conduct a referendum.
They can only be used for "constitutional" decisions, like the number of councillors.
  • Council can conduct an electoral poll, conducted by the Electoral Commission.,
but the result is not binding, and turnout is likely to be low because voting is not compulsory.
  • Council can conduct its own poll using the mail, telephone, or internet.
  • Council can conduct a workshop, where the participants are given a briefing first, and participate in a discussion, in order to help them make an informed decision.
  • A decision on a specific proposal might have to wait until after tenders are submitted,
because many details would remain confidential until then.
  • Perhaps there could be a two stage process:
    • A telephone poll now, to find out if people want to continue with the process.
    • An electoral poll or workshop at the end, where people look at the detailed proposal, and decide if this is what they want.

CCTV

The Springwood Chamber of Commerce has installed some CCTV (Closed Circuit TV) cameras on Macquarie Road.
Some other people have expressed concerns.

Council decides to proceed with three developers

On 17 July, Council decided to proceed with the three shortlisted developers: Coles, Jamieson, and Woolworths.
Council has started preparing a Request for Detailed Proposals, which will be sent to the three developers in 2009.
The developers will then submit their Detailed Proposals, which will be evaluated by Council, and a final decision made.
