Handout from Councillors

Facts about the Springwood Town Centre Project

Fact: The Council wishes to upgrade community facilities in Springwood, especially the Civic Centre, Springwood Library and the Neighbourhood Centre.

Fact: Many businesses in Springwood have reported a downturn in custom in the two and a half years since the upgrade of the Winmalee BI-LO to a large Coles supermarket. (Source: Springwood Chamber of Commerce)

Fact: The RTA have failed to manage local traffic in Springwood leading to daily morning and afternoon traffic jams on Macquarie Road and Hawkesbury Road.

Fact: There will be NO SALE of Community Land. (All Ward 3 Councillors are on record as opposing the sale of Community land under any circumstances.)

What are we doing? The Council has commenced a process to identify the problems that Springwood town centre faces. In particular we want a Civic Centre that is comfortable even on the hottest days, a larger library and sufficient space for community groups. We don't want the traffic jams that afflict the area every morning and afternoon. In addition we have tested the private sector to see what options are available for investment in Springwood. All expressions thus far have been from Supermarket interests. The Council is not of a mind to proceed with any proposal at this time but will develop a comprehensive social and cultural plan for Springwood (see overleaf) and seek input from the community in March 2009.

"Although we each come from very differing political viewpoints, we are united in our desire to provide more community facilities and to ensure the viability of local businesses - PROVIDED that the character and amenity of our  beautiful town is not affected."
