Voters in the Springwood area will be asked about a detailed proposal from either Woolworths, Coles and the Jamieson Property Group in a poll on the controversial Springwood revitalisation project.
In a fiery meeting in Springwood Civic Centre on Tuesday night, councillors voted to go to the people with a specific proposal derived from the three companies about the delivery of upgraded community and cultural facilities.
This position was strongly opposed by lobby group Save Our Springwood (SOS) who wanted the poll to ask a general question about how Springwood's facilities could be upgraded, without detailed proposals from the supermarket giants.
Councillors Van der Kley, Searle, McLaren, Hamilton, Greenhill, Myles and Creed voted in favour of the specific poll option. Councillors Clarke, Gibbs, Mays and Luchetti voted against the plan. Councillor McCallum wasn't at the meeting.
Council will decide how the poll will be conducted at a future meeting.
